It’s the first Windows version in over 20 years that doesn’t have Internet Explorer.

You might have installed Internet Explorer, the legacy version of Microsoft Edge, and the new Chromium-powered Edge at the same time during Windows 10’s lifetime. This trio of browsers was a fantastic depiction of Microsoft’s web problems over the last decade, but now that Internet Explorer is being phased out in 2022, it’ll also be phased out of Windows 11.

Internet Explorer will be “disabled” in Windows 11 according to Microsoft. I was concerned that this meant Internet Explorer would continue to exist after the ultimate nail in its coffin was driven home on June 15th, 2022, but it is actually being phased out of Windows 11. “On Windows 11, the Internet Explorer 11 desktop version will not be available. “The default browser for Windows 11 is Microsoft Edge,” a Microsoft spokesman tells The Verge. “To power IE mode in Microsoft Edge, the MSHTML engine is included in the Windows 11 operating system.”

Internet Explorer doesn’t launch in the leaked copy of Windows 11.

We weren’t expecting Internet Explorer to make an appearance in Windows 11, but Microsoft has stated that the Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) of Windows 10 will continue to contain it next year, despite a consumer termination date of June 15, 2022. Windows 11 will now completely eliminate the browser, and you’ll be sent to Microsoft Edge instead if you use shortcuts like iexplore.

It’s the first time in more than two decades that Microsoft hasn’t included Internet Explorer with a new version of Windows. If my recollection serves me correctly, Microsoft explicitly incorporated Internet Explorer with Windows Explorer and other essential portions of Windows for the first time in the Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2.5 in 1997.

Just a year after the release of Internet Explorer in October 1997, this bundling resulted in the infamous United States v. Microsoft antitrust case. As they say, the rest is history.
